I found this book, the second in a trilogy, while waiting (years later, still waiting...) for more in the author's Immortals After Dark series; I imagine most people reading this or considering it are in the same boat -- those books, easily at least the beginning 75% of the whole series, are amazing and make you want to read more from Cole; and whoever decided to include the hot preview of this book at the end of them is a genius. Hook, line and sinker. So yeah, I bought it, despite thinking I must be a sucker. I read this one, and then went back to buy the first and much later the third during other IAD droughts. I put all of that upfront to really hammer home the point that I probably would not have bought this if I hadn't already been a Cole fan. Obviously, I'm not a stranger to romance or sex, but this just isn't something I'd go out of my way to look for; it isn't that this is bad, because it really isn't, it just isn't as good as most of her other stuff. Her mediocre is still far superior to the vast majority of seems to be offered on Kindle Unlimited, for instance.So this book. I read this 2nd book of 3 before I read the first, and it can be standalone -- you won't be lost but reading them all naturally connects some dots, if you decide you like this. I practically devoured this book til I hit, uh, roadblocks that actually ticked me off enough to set it down and chew things over; but I found myself picking it up and going right back to it. Their romance is a good read. It escalates quite quickly but plot demanded it, and they actually had conversations that I liked reading. Basically, though, it was the out-of-nowhere-amateurish-seeming-to-me BDSM and the male's (re)actions to situations... sexy and intelligent and capable of mucho charisma, yes, but wow can he be an arrogant, utter ass. Ultimately, however, I decided that I liked that he was flawed and not perfect, and Cat was undoubtedly his perfect foil. When Cat finally was able to lose her muzzle, it was supremely satisfying to read her going off on him; if she could move past the crap, I guess I could.Basically, the good: their story has good development, there is a plot and holy hot, abundant sex. Both characters are strong personalities and individuals, and I liked reading about them growing together... for the most part. Now the bad. I'm not giving spoilers but I already voiced my opinion on Maxim's personality above. And while I think this did BDSM better than something like 50 Shades of Grey did, the fact that I can even make that comparison is telling and it isn't telling much good. I feel like Cole must be trying to broaden her audience, in essence, and she's not a bad writer so reading anything written by her is rather engaging. But that's actually maybe a little worse. Especially when I consider her other recent offerings, it feels like this is cashing in on 50 Shades and its ilk, and I legit cannot tell if she's just mildly titillated by BDSM and thus only touches it with a long, padded stick or if she's being pushed by publishers/just in it for the money -- she's a good writer, so I really cannot tell, which is frustrating. And it bugs me to question.In summary, this book's not a waste of money when compared to a lot of romance novels out there that include explicit sex. But it isn't quite up to Cole's previously set, incredibly high standard courtesy of IAD, either. If you like or don't mind very mild/vague "mainstream" BDSM, you'll enjoy the sexy times; it isn't any more then general leanings in that direction and definitely not a mirror on the lifestyle, which I'm personally okay with. I enjoyed the book and appreciate that this trash isn't as trashy as a lot of these books tend to be. And it definitely did not discourage me from purchasing the rest of the trio of books in this series.Read The Professional if you want more of the bit more mainstream BDSM and a fair bit more backstory to explain the male's leanings. Read this one, The Master, if you want a lighter focus on the mainstream BDSM and a stronger female personality. Read about the last brother in The Player if you want a mind!@#$.... Now can I have a good IAD novel, please. This could have been a 3/4 star read for me because I did enjoy the characters (banter/interaction) and while the relationship was short, they did spend a lot time talking and getting to know each other. As much as they could with both of them being guarded. The sex was pretty damn good too.However, I can't get over some of the things Maksim did to Cat/Lucia.1. Forcing birth control on her. That was just so gross and over the line.2. The chastity belt situation. Also gross how he handled it.3. No safe word for most of the book. He is engaging in BDSM with a novice and did not provide a safe word for her to use. Didn't even give her a different method to end their play. Very disturbing for a "master". I don't care that he thought she was a professional. EVERY submissive gets a safe word.Lastly, the Spanish in this was horrid. It made me want to quit reading the book.
